AED - Defibrillation
After starting CPR, it is important to use a defibrillator. How long that take depends on where the closest one is located. Will you have to wait until emergency responders arrive to bring one or is there a public defibrillator even closer?
Automated External Defibrillators -- AEDs -- are designed to be used by non-medical persons. They are very easy to use, even by people who have never used one. Don't not be afraid to take an AED from its wall mount and use it.
Contrary to what many people think, an AED doesn't actually start the heart. Instead, it actually stops the erratic quivering, or fibrillation, of a strong heart that is too good to die. If time runs out, it will die, and that is why it important to shock it before it is too late. Waiting for paramedics to arrive could be too long.
If you have an AED or know where one is, make sure it is registered with 9-1-1. In Orange County, the location of every nearby registered AED will be known by 9-1-1 operators when they receive a call needing an AED. To register your AED click on the upper button below.
Also, download the free PulsePoint apps on your smart phone. It will let you know when a CPR emergency is happening near you. It will also show you where the closest AEDs are located.
